I heard this song on the radio a few days ago when I was driving to work, and I fell in love! I looked it up online and found out that it’s by Andrew Allen, another BCer! If you check out his youtube channel, he has a few other songs that are all very good! I recommend Amazing

The song is just so light and fun. Maybe because I was in the car when I first heard it but now the song just reminds me of driving down the highway on a hot summer day and singing along to the radio. I’m going to Toronto next month and we’re hoping to drive to Montreal & Quebec City; this is definitely going on my iPod for the drive!

Summer Sangria

Summer time calls for patio drinks! I love a great sangria any time of the year but it feels even more necessary during the summer (especially if you’re taking summer classes like I am!). Now there’s a bunch of sangria recipes out there but here’s what my girlfriends and I love to do for a girls night in!

What you need:

- 1 bottle of wine (traditionally red but take a risk and do white!)
- approx 1 cup (250ml) of orange juice
- approx 1/2 cup (125ml) of club soda
- 1 medium sized orange
-  a handful of berries (I like strawberries but blackberries work too!)
- ice but not too much!
- a splash of lemon juice (optional)

We usually start off with the pitcher a quarter full of ice, pour in the wine and orange juice, add in the fruits and then top it off with the club soda to help get it to our desired strength. The lemon juice helps take the edge of the liquor like in any mixed alcohol drink! If you put in too much club soda, a dash of sugar will quickly reverse that, or else just let the fruit sit for a bit.

I prefer the orange cut into thin slices but you can also cut them into small wedges. If you’re using strawberries, either halve or quarter them; smaller berries are fine as is.

Another thing I’ve learned through the years from my bartender friend is to put the fruit in first, mush them up to create a bit of a puree and then add in the liquids. Really, you can’t go wrong with sangria!

Cheers and enjoy!

Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

There’s something about Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting that I love. Maybe it was the fact that there was a recreation done by students in my high school, or that in grade 8 Humanities we analyzed Don McLean’s song “Vincent” as part of our poetry unit…

Who knows, maybe the sky is all swirled up like that and no one sees it because we’re not looking hard enough. As a Communication student whenever I explain what I do and what I write about to my friends ,they’re always amazed. They’ve either never considered things like that, or seen those minute details, or compared this to that… Starry Night reminds me of what life is like when you look beyond.

Of course the story of Vincent Van Gogh’s life is tragic yet captivating in itself too.

I found a 1000 piece puzzle of Starry Night and I think I’m going to put it together when I’m done this semester… Do some brain training.
