Don’t let my size fool you; I’m five feet tall but my personality is much taller. My friends may call me a princess but it doesn’t mean I’m not tough. Sometimes I wonder if the rest of the world finds life as amusing as I do. Most of the time I’m laughing inside my head at the little things I notice. Generally opinionated but I always want to add in my two-cents either way. Recently bit by the travel bug, I spend my days looking up vacation packages and seat sales and dreaming of my next big adventure.
And yes, my name really is Silkie.
“Do”:
SIFE. Right now I’m the Director of External Relations for SIFE Simon Fraser. Standing for Students in Free Enterprise, it’s a global organization — worldwide, there are 1500+ teams, within Canada, there are 40+ teams. Active in our local communities, we look to create economic opportunities — this ranges from consulting projects to environmental sustainability programs to teach financial literacy. It’s almost easier to ask “What does SIFE *not* do?” instead of defining what we do do. I advocate community development recognizing how fortunate a life I lead. SIFE has empowered me to believe that I can be more, and showed me that entrepreneurship is a way of life.
I’ve been event planning since I was 16-years old, and I love it! In the past, I’ve worked/ volunteered for:
- Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW)
- Student Marketing Association (SMA) – Inter-collegiate Marketing Competition (IMC)
- Business Administration Student Society (BASS) – FROSH
- South Burnaby Neighbourhood House
Plus a part-time job while being a student. Needless to say, I love being busy. I’m a strong believer in learning through doing.
“Speak”:
Fashion. What girl doesn’t love to shop? I have more clothes than hangers; my bedroom serves as a walk-in closet. I’m a thrift/ vintage shop kind of girl. Constantly procrastinating and online window shopping, it consumes a great deal of my life. Street fashion and blogs are my inspiration. I appreciate a good designer piece but refuse to give into conspicuous consumption. My style is feminine and romantic, sometimes quirky. I adore versatility and classic pieces.
Vancouver. Once my former co-worker commented “ask any British Columbian and they believe they live in the best place on earth.” We’ve got the mountains, the oceans and every thing in between – except the white sand beach; can you really complain? The laid back style of the west coast paired with the bustle of a major Canadian city makes Vancouver the perfect pace for me. There’s always something to do, and I love being a part of it.
Happiness. One day I was in Chapters and I found a book entitled, “The Happiness Project” I could have bought it and read about someone else’s pursuit of happiness, or gone out there and lived it. I choose to live it. I truly believe that happiness is a choice we make. I’m still figuring out life and who I am, but I do know I will be grateful and happy.
Nonsense. Life is spontaneous and very amusing adventure. This will contain a strange mish-mash of things.

Mish-mash blogs are the best. Makes the author “real.”
